Vive La Vuelta!
As La Vuelta draws to a close with Froomey claiming an historic grand tour double, and the sun sets on El Pistolero’s career, it’s time to review what happened in the Wheeler’s fantasy league. The racing was great… probably the most entertaining grand tour of the season with some epic stages.
Stage 20 finishing on the Angiliru was like a grand tour on it’s own – what a brutal climb! Contador secured legendary status as he retires with a fantastic display breaking off the peloton to claw back the breakaway and take a brilliant win.
As Sky were celebrating their second grand tour victory of 2017, we were toting up the points to see the final standings in the Wheelers league. In the first half of La Vuelta, the lead changed hands a few times and scoring was tight, but alas as the climbs got steeper, one team started to draw away and victory never looked in doubt. Step forward Pedro Power – La Vuelta winners! Well done Pete with an inspired selection, claiming all three of the podium positions in La Vuelta, and position 573 from 25,199 Velogames entrants.
The other podium positions were taken by Pedro`s Peloton of Possible Pandemonium in second, and Digger’s espanolas grabbing third at the last count up to edge out mi casa es tu casa.
So to the final league table:
1. Pedro Power (Pete Orton) = 7231
2. Pedro’s Peloton of Possible Pandemonium (Peter Smith) = 5856
3. Diesels españolas (Digger) = 5744
4. mi casa es tu casa (Cookie) = 5622
5. Choppertastic (Dan Frost) = 5156
6. All the gear, no idea (still) (Scott) = 4947
7. Etappers (Nigel) = 4723
8. Doris’ Paella munching hero’s (Doris) = 4453
9. Picasso’s Peloton (Ant) = 4452
10. Team Tidy (Will) = 4242
Clear a tour to name your team ‘Pedro’ – see you on the next one!

Thanks Digger! Beautifully put! I’d just like to thank my family for all their support through what’s been an extremely tough three weeks. I couldn’t have done it without them. Well done to Pete S and Digger for their podium spots and to Cookie for his fine lead out work. I’m just off to get my bike sprayed red for the next club ride! Adios!!
Well, I’d like to congratulate team Pedro Power, ad wish them well for the future. Clearly Doris’ Paella Munching hero’s have some work to do and we’ll take a look at the team performance. There were several positives, but we’ll review our selection policy over the winter. Thanks to the organisers for putting together another fun event, and rest assured we’ll come back stronger.
Not bad, second in my second grand tour. I’ll sit down with my support network over the coming months to work out my priorities for 2018. Will I do a Froome and aim for the Tour or be a greedy old so and so and try for all 3?
Huge congratulations to Pedro Ortega on his excellent win, richly deserved.
